If you’ve lost one or more teeth because of an accident or decay, you want the replacement to look as good as the original – or better – and to last. We use dental implants to give you a brand new smile.

What is an implant?

An implant is a titanium metal post that is fixed (implanted) in the jawbone so it becomes as much a part of your jaw as your other teeth and is used to support one or more false teeth.  Before we fit an implant we have to test the bone in your jaw, to make sure it is strong enough to do the job.

Fitting the implant is done under local anaesthetic and is relatively simple procedure that is carried out under local anaesthesia.

There are a variety of implant systems available, however we only use Straumann implants as they have a world class reputation and in the highly unlikely event of a breakage they come with a guarantee.

Once the implant has been fixed your jaw needs to heal before the new tooth or teeth are fitted.

Brand new smile

During the healing process we recommend you use a temporary bridge.

The replacement tooth or teeth could take the form of a denture clipped to the implant, a crown, or a bridge of one or more teeth secured to the teeth either side of the gap.  Crowns and dentures are colour-matched to your other teeth and fitted onto the implant, so they look and feel completely natural.  They’re much more secure than dentures and no-one will be able to tell you’ve had an implant fitted.

Implants should last as long as natural teeth if you look after them properly.  If you don’t clean them thoroughly they will develop plaque in the same way that natural teeth do.  That can lead to gum infection, soreness and bleeding, just as it would for natural teeth.  If you play contact sports, it is important that you wear a good mouthguard, as implants can be damaged just like normal teeth.
